You’ve probably seen it among the ingredient list in your face serums, fillers, lotions, and even medspa facials - but what exactly is hyaluronic acid and what’s the big deal with it, anyway?

For starters, it really is an amazing ingredient. It’s popular in beauty products and aesthetic enhancement treatments because it has the ability to help boost the look, feel, and elasticity of your skin! It’s one of our favorite ingredients at Colorado Beauty RN, thanks to its versatility and awesome benefits, but many patients don’t understand just what all the fuss is about!

Why Is HA Everywhere?

In addition to its great skin-enhancing benefits, hyaluronic acid is extremely popular because it is a naturally-occurring molecule that is already found in our skin! It helps bind moisture to our skin cells, which is extremely important for patients who are looking to reverse signs of aging.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that is naturally produced by the body’s connective tissues. It’s found throughout our bodies, in our joints, cells, organs, and more. In particular, about 50% of all HA is found in our skin. It helps your skin maintain elasticity and draws moisture in to help maintain a youthful glow.

Unfortunately, just like collagen, your natural production of hyaluronic acid starts to diminish over time, typically peaking in your mid-20s and then steadily decreasing from there. That’s why it is such a popular ingredient and so many beauty experts rave about the benefits of HA!

There are many ways to (re)introduce this molecule into your skin. We always recommend visiting a licensed professional for medical-grade products, which can often be higher strength and more powerful than drug store or beauty brands.

Incorporating HA Into Your Skincare Routine

Using hyaluronic acid in your skincare or beauty routine - whether it is a daily serum, moisturizer, or even filler injections - can be an excellent way to promote smoother, softer, and more supple skin. But the tricky part is how. As a molecule, HA has a certain size or density. In its natural form, it can sometimes be too large to penetrate deep into the skin when introduced topically.

Applying HA to your face will still help draw moisture to the surface and introduce some much-need hydration to your cells. HA can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! But if you want to ensure the formula makes its way into the various layers of skin, you’ll need something with a lower molecular weight. Thankfully, a salt-like version of hyaluronic acid - sodium hyaluronate - is available. This smaller molecule can penetrate deep into the areas being affected by the loss of collagen and sun damage.

Other great ways to get more hyaluronic acid into your body to help benefit from its anti-aging properties include:

  • Using a serum. We mentioned this, but there’s a reason why! Serums are typically much lighter than other face creams and lotions, so it helps deliver those much-needed nutrients directly into the skin.

  • Lotions, creams, or moisturizers. That’s not to say you can’t also use HA in your moisturizer or face cream. When it comes to hyaluronic acid, our resident nurse, Jenny Garland, RN, says the more the merrier!

  • Face masks. For a concentrated boost of hyaluronic acid, try using a high-end face mask! Try this when your skin is feeling particularly dry and dehydrated.

  • Dermal fillers. All Juvéderm® fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, which helps deliver a natural-looking result while simultaneously boosting collagen production beneath the skin.

  • MedSpa treatments. Many facilities offer services that incorporate some type of hyaluronic acid to help boost the effects of the procedure.

  • In your diet. Seriously! You can incorporate foods that are high in HA into your diet to help generate more within your body. Bone broth, red meat, kale, and sweet potatoes are great for this.

  • Oral supplements. Perhaps organ meats and leafy greens aren’t an option, or you want to find an easier way to ensure a daily dose of HA. Try oral supplements with your vitamins in the morning!

Take Your Skin Back in Time

At Colorado Beauty RN, owner and aesthetic nurse, Jenny Garland, is constantly telling her clients about the incredible benefits packed into this marvelous molecule! Since it is naturally-occurring, it helps minimize allergy issues, irritation risks, and more. Some patients may see a bit of swelling after applying, but this is often limited to more in-depth treatments like fillers. Ultimately, most patients find that their skin immediately improves after HA.
