These days, Botox is a common term that is often synonymous with dermal injections. It’s well-known for its ability to reduce wrinkles in the skin, but it often is stigmatized or judged as a vain or superficial treatment. The truth is every year, over 7 million Americans receive some form of Botulinum toxin injections - the main ingredient in Botox. Some do so for cosmetic reasons, while others utilize the medical benefits of this incredible injectable.

As the most popular cosmetic enhancement treatment in the country, Botox has made countless women and men feel more confident and attractive. For some patients, however, taking the plunge can be scary! We hear lots of questions from potential clients who are unsure about Botox, and we believe taking the time to research and become familiar with your different options is an important first step.

The Story Behind Botox

Botox was originally developed by two Vancouver-based medical professionals back in the late 1980s. It was FDA-approved in 1989 and originally used to treat spasms and similar issues around the eyes. Its powerful anti-wrinkle properties, however, led its creators to quickly rebrand. In 2002, Botox was undergoing its first clinical trials as a cosmetic enhancement treatment.

The main ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin type A, also known as OnabotulinumtoxinA. This ingredient is classified as a neurotoxin, which targets the nervous system and causes the muscles to temporarily relax. Over time, this trains your face to soften and refrain from using those wrinkle-causing muscles.

Why Consider Botox?

Everyone’s reason for receiving Botox injections may differ. Some of the best benefits include:

  • It has few risks and side-effects.

  • It treats your muscles, not your skin.

  • It’s fast, easy and virtually painless.

  • Results often appear within a week and can last up to a year between treatments.

  • It can deliver subtle, natural-looking results.

At our facility in Castle Rock, we offer one-on-one consultations to discuss why you are considering Botox and whether it is a good fit for you.

Medical Purposes

Botox is much more than just a cosmetic injectable treatment. In addition to being FDA-approved for the treatment of mild to severe wrinkles, Botox can provide patients with relief from certain medical conditions. Most commonly, it is known for its treatment of chronic migraines, excessive underarm perspiration, and urinary incontinence. In addition to these incredible uses, Botox can also be a great option for patients who suffer from stiffness in the arms and legs (focal spasticity), abnormal neck positioning (cervical dystonia), eyelid twitching (blepharospasms), and misaligned eye muscles (strabismus). Even patients suffering from TMJ or teeth clenching can see relief from Botox injections.

Preventative Treatment

Botox is becoming increasingly popular among younger patients in their early to mid-twenties. While it has little effect on patients who have yet to develop fine lines in their skin, those who are starting to see wrinkles - like the dreaded number 11 between the eyes - can enjoy Botox as a preventative treatment. This means that, in addition to filling in and tightening any areas that may be starting to show signs of wrinkles and fine lines, it can help prevent the lines from getting deeper. Even better, receiving Botox injections as a preventative treatment can help you avoid more in-depth facial cosmetic surgery later in life.

Baby Botox

Don’t worry - we’re not giving babies Botox! Patients who are seeking a more natural (or conservative) look may benefit from baby Botox, which simply means using a lower volume of product to achieve the desired result. Usually, this falls somewhere between 5 to 20 units, but the amount will vary for each client to help ensure a personalized approach. Baby Botox is a great way to start your Botox journey, and it is very popular among first-time users. It is also a terrific option for special occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or any event where you will be photographed or want to look your absolute best!
